What Does “Retouching” Really Mean in a Professional Headshot Session?

One of the most common questions I get from clients booking a professional headshot session is:
“Do you edit the photos?”

The short answer? Yes—but with a light, natural touch that keeps you looking like you.

Let’s walk through what that means and what you can expect when you book a corporate headshot or LinkedIn photo session with me.

What’s Included in Light Retouching?

At B. Keith Photography, every selected image from your session includes light, realistic retouching to help you look polished and confident, without heavy editing or overdone filters. That includes:

  • Removal of minor blemishes

  • Softening of under-eye circles

  • Taming a few flyaway hairs

  • Realistic whitening/brightening of teeth

What I don’t do: I don’t smooth skin or blur out your natural features. Skin texture is part of what makes you look real and relatable, especially in a professional headshot meant to represent you in the real world.

On-the-Spot Help to Look Your Best

Before we even start shooting, I’ve got tools on hand to help you show up camera-ready. At the beginning of your session, I offer:

  • Hair spray and styling tools to help with flyaways

  • Blotting papers and moisturizer to keep your skin soft and vibrant

  • A lint roller to clean up your outfit and keep it looking sharp

These little details make a big difference, especially in high-resolution headshots where everything shows.

Why Light Retouching Matters

The goal of your LinkedIn headshot, business portrait, or actor headshot is to create an authentic, professional impression. When someone meets you after seeing your photo, we want them to recognize you, not wonder if they’re meeting your Photoshop double.

Natural, polished headshots help build trust. That’s why I focus on realistic editing that highlights your best features without hiding who you are.

“Can I Request More Editing?”

If you’d like additional changes—like scar removal, more advanced retouching, or custom edits—I offer those at an additional fee per image. But in most cases, the light retouching included in your session is all you’ll need.

Final Thoughts

My approach to professional headshot photography is simple:

Make you look like the best version of yourself. No heavy editing. No fake filters. Just great lighting, expert guidance, and a few finishing touches to bring out your natural confidence.
